Faith Is the First Step

How many faiths are a part of Faith Collaborative?”

It’s a question I have been asked more than once. And whenever I hear it, I am reminded that the name Faith Collaborative was never really about counting how many faith traditions are represented at the table.

It is about something much bigger. It is about what happens when someone decides to take the first step toward something new.

Think about anyone who has ever had to overcome a difficult season in life. Whether you are recovering from trauma, rebuilding after incarceration, seeking employment, navigating homelessness, leaving an unhealthy relationship, overcoming addiction, or simply trying to figure out what comes next—moving forward requires courage.

And sometimes, before you can see the entire path, you have to take the first step. That first step requires faith. Faith says:

When someone has experienced significant trauma, disappointment, rejection, or loss, trusting the process can feel almost impossible.

That is faith.

But Faith Was Never Meant to Be a Solo Journey

That’s where the word Collaborative comes in. We believe that people are stronger when they don’t have to walk alone. Overcoming obstacles requires community.

It requires people who will encourage you, listen to you, connect you to resources, open doors, share knowledge, pray with you, advocate for you, and sometimes simply sit beside you and remind you:

“Keep going.”

Collaboration means understanding that we all have something to give and something to receive. There may be a season when you need support. There may be another season when you are the person providing support to someone else. That’s community. That’s collaboration. And that’s what we are building at Faith Collaborative.

Using Your Faith Muscle

One of the things we encourage the people we serve to do is exercise their faith muscle.

Just like a muscle becomes stronger through use, faith can become stronger as we practice trusting, hoping, persevering, and taking action. Sometimes you have to start small.

Faith doesn’t mean that everything will be easy. Faith means believing that you don’t have to know everything about the journey before you begin it. And sometimes, the greatest evidence of faith is simply refusing to give up.

We Set the Table

This philosophy is woven into everything we do at Faith Collaborative. It is especially evident in our Dining with a Purpose program. We literally set the table.

We create a space where people can come together, share a meal, have meaningful conversations, connect with resources, learn something new, and build relationships.

But the table represents much more than food. The table represents belonging.

It says:

When we set the table, we are creating an environment where people can take that first step—and hopefully discover that they don’t have to take the next step alone.

Faith + Collaboration = Movement

Recovery is not one step. Healing is not one step. Rebuilding your life is not one step. It is a journey. There may be progress and setbacks. There may be days when you feel strong and days when you question everything. There may be moments when you need to stop and rest before you continue. That’s okay.

What matters is that you keep moving forward. Faith gets you started. Collaboration helps you keep going. Perseverance keeps you moving forward. And endurance helps you finish the journey.

At Faith Collaborative, we want to be part of that journey. We want to connect people with providers, resources, mentors, volunteers, faith leaders, and community members who genuinely want to see them succeed.

We want to create spaces where people can feel seen, heard, loved, and supported. We want to encourage people to believe that their past does not have to dictate their future. And most importantly, we want to remind every person we encounter that there is still purpose ahead.

There Is Purpose in Your Next Step

We believe that God has a purpose for every life. Sometimes, however, trauma can make it difficult to see that purpose. Sometimes survival becomes the goal. Sometimes getting through the day is all someone can manage. And that’s why we don’t ask people to figure out their entire future at once. We encourage them to take the next step. Then another. And another. Until one day, they look back and realize just how far they have come. That is why we are called Faith Collaborative. Not because we are counting faiths. Not because everyone believes exactly the same thing.

But because we recognize that faith is often where transformation begins—and collaboration is how we help one another along the way.

And we will continue to remind those we encounter:

Take the first step.

You don’t have to know everything that comes next. You just have to have enough faith to begin. Because faith is the first step—but perseverance and endurance keep you moving forward. And at Faith Collaborative, we’ll be here to walk with you.
